Avoid These Common Hair Mistakes!

There are a number of common hair mistakes that many of us make without even realizing it!  Over time, mistreatment can lead to damaged, dry, frizzy, broken, hard-to-style and downright difficult hair.  That's why we have compiled a list of some of the most common hair mistakes.  Read on to find out if you are committing tress treason, and enjoy the path to healthy, beautiful hair!

1.  Over washing

Most Common Hair Mistakes

Shampooing your hair every day keeps it healthy and clean, right? Wrong! While shampoo is a great solution to cleanse the scalp and avoid grease, sweat, and other unwanted build-up, it can actually be counterproductive when applied too often. Just as it is tough on dirt and grime, shampoo is tough on your hair's natural moisture. Over-shampooing can strip your hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry and frizzy. It can also cause color-treated hair to fade more quickly. The solution? Everyone's hair is unique, however most of us should only wash our hair between two and four times per week. As a general rule, don't wash your hair any more frequently than you must! Let those naturally shiny strands shine, honey!

2.  Pestilent ponytails

Most Common Hair Mistakes

Erroneous ponytails can quickly slip from being  girl's best friend to her hair's worst nightmare, as they can easily break and tear even the toughest strands.

In order to keep your pony safe, always avoid elastic bands made of rubber, and those that have metal clasps. Instead, opt for smoother, snag-free elastics. Stylists and celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kristen Bell are loving these brilliant and oh-so-chic hair ties by Emi-Jay. With texture that holds sans the snagging, tons of adorable colors and prints to choose from, and a clever design to avoid the dreaded ponytail crease, these stylish accessories also donate a portion of all proceeds to Locks of Love... what's not to love about that?

Additionally, be sure that you don't  pull your hair too tight when you are wrapping an elastic around it.  Finally, never pull your hair into a ponytail when it is wet- wet hair is actually way more fragile than normal hair, so it is even more prone to breaking and snapping.  We recommend throwing in a soft headband or a few bobby pins until your hair dries. And no matter how gentle you think you are being, try not to put your hair up in the same pony every day... even the most minuscule damage can become noticeable over time.

3.  Burn, baby burn!

Most Common Hair Mistakes

We're sure you've hear it a million times before (but then again, there is probably a reason for that)... heat tools can be weapons of mass (hair) destruction!  While its hard to altogether avoid the allure of silky straight locks, or perfectly bouncy curls, or even a frizz-free blowout, curling irons, flat irons, magic wands, hair driers, and other styling tools that use heat can cause tremendous damage to your hair, and should only be used in moderation.  When you do turn to heat, make sure you keep your tool set on the lowest setting possible.  And always, always, always spray hair with a thermal protectant first (we love Kenra Platinum Blow Dry Spray) to give your tresses a seal of moisture and a first line of defense.

4.  Excessive brushing

Most Common Hair Mistakes

100 strokes a day may work for the little princess, but when it comes to brushing your hair into shiny splendor, less is more! Over-brushing you hair can cause cuticle damage, breakage, and split ends, as your repeatedly snag and tear your tresses into submission. Brush your hair just enough to pull out the knots, always starting at the ends and gradually working your way toward your scalp. Its also a good idea to make sure you have a strand-friendly brush, which will minimize damage. And keep in mind that brushing your hair immediately after you blow dry or straighten it can counteract all that work you just put into making it gorgeous. For best results, give your 'do time to set: allow your hair a five to ten minute cooling period before brushing it after heat styling.

5.  Skipping out on Trims

Common Hair Mistakes

Whether you're on a mission to grow out your locks or you've kept your 'do the same length since scrunchies were cool, timely trims are an absolute must for any healthy head of hair. Avoiding the hair dresser may seem like an obvious way to grow hair out quickly or save a few bucks, but in the end it will only lead to split ends and frizz, resulting in money spent on products and extreme cuts to fix, and hours of frustration. Lisa Abbey, creative director of Salon Blue in New York, advises that, "Haircuts have a shelf life of four to eight weeks before they start to lose shape and become harder to style". Trim your tips regularly to keep your style looking and feeling fabulous.

Keeping these common mistakes in mind is an easy way to reform your bad hair habits, ensuring a happier you, and a healthier, more beautiful mane every day of the week!
