Ahhhh, summer. The time of year when we have to put less thought into our lesser amount of clothing, easy-breezier hair ‘dos, and quick, light makeup to enhance our perfect sun-kissed skin.
If only it were that easy. All too often, I forget a sweater to wear over my cute spaghetti strap summer dress and end up freezing in air conditioning, my ‘beach waves’ end up looking more like I stuck my finger in an electrical socket instead of just leaving the salty, moist air of the beach, and I am figuring out how to cover humidity-induced blemishes with all my foundations that I use the other nine months of the year that my skin does not see the light of day.
Regardless, I refuse to give up on the romantic idea of what my summer beauty routine should be, so in an effort to help, here are some makeup tips to help every gal and every hair color apply quick, sexy makeup that enhances her coloring during our favorite sultry months.
Blondes: Obviously, blondes are designed by nature to absolutely shine in the summer (check out our secret to perfect summer blonde here)- nothing looks better with blonde hair than gorgeous, sun-kissed skin.
In order to enhance the glow of bronze skin against shimmering golden hair, iridescent makeup is the way to go. Also think of your two favorite summer flavors when thinking about your color palette: peaches and champagne. Yum. Start with Sorme Under Shadow Eye Shadow Primer, then apply a shimmery, iridescent champagne shadow to your lid. Try Sorme Long-Lasting Eye Shadow in Ice or Sorme Mineral Botanicals Eye Shadow in Flash.
To enhance the glow of your cheeks, loosely sweep a light powder blush in a shimmery pinky-peach tone - Sorme Mineral Botanicals Blush in Excitement is perfect! Finally, nothing says ‘sexy’ and ‘summer’ like perfectly glossy, peachy-pink lips that are irresistible to kiss! For the perfect summer pout, start with Sorme Smearproof Lip Liner in Baby Doll. Coat your lips with Sorme Perfect Performance Lip Color in Perhaps, then top with Sorme Lip Thick Plumping Lip Gloss in Twinkle for shimmer and shine.
Brunettes: The awesome thing about being a brunette in the summer? You get to play around with bold hues in your summer makeup routine, which your fairer hair friends don’t really have the luxury of doing. Since darker hair frames the face, it creates a perfect canvas for brunettes to play with bold hues of bronze and gold during the hot months.
Start with Sorme Under Shadow Eye Shadow Primer on your lids, then play around with a bold metallic shadow like Sorme Mineral Botanicals Eye Shadow in Bronzina. Enhance your lids with a slightly smudged black liner (try Sorme Smearproof Eyeliner in Black or Sorme Jet Liner Precision Liquid Eyeliner in Black) and top with Sorme Extreme Volumizing Mascara in Black to make your eyes pop.
For your cheeks, use bronzer with some golden shimmer to reflect the light, like Sorme Believable Bronzer in Goddess. (Need help on bronzer? Here are some more tips on how to utilize bronzer in the summer.) Finally, and maybe best of all, brunettes can rock darker pouts in the summer, so have fun with shimmery red lips like Sorme Perfect Performance Lip Color in Glamour Red or Sorme Lip Thick Plumping Lip Gloss in Express to create the perfect pout during those hot summer nights.
Have black hair? Think pink! Soft pink or nude-hued eyes (like Sorme Long Lasting Eye Shadow in Buff), dreamy pink blush (try Sorme Mineral Botanicals Blush in Love), and glossy, ballerina-pink lips (like Sorme Tasty Tubes in Magnetic) during the summer.
Redheads: I saved the best for last, or maybe I just said that since I happen to be a redhead this summer. Last summer I was a redhead with significant blonde highlights, so I followed more of the blonde guidelines for my summer makeup routine; this summer I am definitely having fun playing with color to compliment my truly red tresses.
With red hair, I love peachy tones and green hues. Line your eyes with Sorme Smearproof Eyeliner in Teal for a pop of color over Sorme Long Lasting Eye Shadow in Bare. Depending on your skin tone and eye color, you can rock Sorme Extreme Volumizing Mascara in either Black or Black/Brown. Then try a pink/peach blush (like Sorme Mineral Botanicals Blush in Harmony) and Sorme Lip Thick Plumping Lip Gloss in Petticoat to complete your look.
Hopefully these tips will help cut down on the time spent thinking about and applying your summer makeup, and so that you look more like the gals in all of favorite June, July, and August beauty magazines instead of a hot mess, literally. Two things to keep your skin healthy this summer: one, try our DIY honey and aloe face mask; and two, don’t forget to always, always, always use a face moisturizer with a higher SPF in the summer to protect your skin from UV rays and keep it looking young!
