Do you ever feel like your skin has a mind of its own?
Dry skin. Oily skin. Pimples. Blackheads. Whiteheads. Acne scars.
Most of us have a skin issue (or two) that keep us eating superfoods and searching for the best products, treatments, and DIY skincare tips for “perfect” skin. If you’re looking for a game-changing product that will brighten, smooth, and freshen up your skin- you need to start using a facial serum.
First things first, what is a facial serum?
A facial serum is a watery or gel-like solution that gets added nutrients into the deeper layers of your skin. A regular moisturizer, while also great for your skin, simply can’t go as deep into your skin. Why? Well simply put, serums are made of very small molecules, so the skin absorbs them much quicker (and deeper) than moisturizers.
An article from WebMD also said, “Serums leave out occlusive, or airtight, moisturizing ingredients such as petrolatum or mineral oil that keep water from evaporating. They also contain fewer lubricating and thickening agents, like nut or seed oils. Most serums are water-based, eliminating oils altogether.”
Tell me more. What are the benefits of using a facial serum?
I read in a recent Cosmopolitan article to think of serums as booster shots at a juice bar! You are rubbing magical nutrients on your face and into your pores to tackle your biggest skin issues. You can find serums for every skin issue and desirable outcome – including skin brightening, acne prevention, and anti-aging.
You could save a few bucks too! If you have an oily skin complexion like me, you might benefit from only using a serum (as opposed to using a serum AND a moisturizer). Talk to your beauty consultant or dermatologist for their expert opinion on which formulas and products are best for you based on your skin type and skin issues.
Alright...I'm interested. When do I use a facial serum in conjunction with my current skin care routine?
Apply a nickel-sized portion of your serum to your face after you using your cleanser and toner. Before applying your moisturizer, wait about 2-3 minutes (at least).
If you use your moisturizer too soon, you might dilute the serum’s active ingredients. And you definitely don’t want to waste your time and money by not letting the serum work its magic!
SOLD! Where can I find a facial serum?
Before I send you on the hunt to purchase a new facial serum, I want to prepare you for something... there is a bit of “sticker shock” for some serums. You can spend anywhere from $20 to $120 on a facial serum. For example, the Yes to Blueberries Intensive Skin Repair serum retails for $20. On the other end, you can find an expensive serum such as Lancome Renergie Life Multi-Action Revivia Concentrate for $120. Do your research, talk to your beauty consultant or dermatologist, and ask your friends what serums they use. Don’t treat a facial serum as an impulse buy – do your due diligence and research!
Just remember- you get what you pay for…and the results are (usually) worth every penny.
In a nutshell, a facial serum is a smart investment! Your skin will be thankful for the amazing, quick, and visible changes. Don't just take my word for it though. Our very own Sarah Eutsler shared how she cleared up her skin using an acne serum called Frangipani.
