When I first found out I was pregnant with Cooper (who is bringing his lovely face into this world in September 2013), I suddenly doubted my ability to do and eat anything. I knew the obvious things I needed to give up, such as wine and raw sushi, but what about everything else I love to do?
“Can I still run?”
“What about riding my bike?”
And obviously: “Is it safe to color my hair while pregnant?”
I immediately went to Google and found a WebMD article that said, “Not much is known about the safety of hair dyes during pregnancy. It's likely that when you apply hair dye, only a small amount is absorbed into your system. So very little chemicals, if any, would be able to get to your baby. In the few animal and human studies that have been done, no changes were seen in the developing baby. Talk with your doctor if you have questions or concerns.”
And then I asked my stylist, Bobbi Shane of Bella Mia, who has two perfectly healthy boys, about her take on coloring hair while pregnant. She assured me that if the rumor were true then hairstylist wouldn’t have children. Another green light to move forward!
But if you still aren’t convinced, here is another perspective from April Wright of Something New at Tiffany’s Salon, “I tell my clients the main concern is their hormones changing, and the hormonal imbalance is what is unpredictable. The concern is how the color will turn out, not so much the color being absorbed and affecting the baby is a negative way. If you're still concerned, consider waiting to color your hair until the second trimester, when your developing baby is less vulnerable. Also, instead of using an all-over hair color, consider a process like highlighting. The chemicals have little or no contact with your scalp. I always suggest double checking with your OB, since they are aware of any risks involved in your pregnancy.”
Great advice, April! Thanks for sharing!
But if you're STILL not convinced, I am living proof that you can color your hair while being pregnant and your baby will be just fine. I took fellow blogger Megan Giannini's advice and went dark for Spring!
