4 Tips for Mastering the Wash-n-Go on Natural Hair

Ask any 2 naturalistas how they employ the wash and go (aka wash-n-go) styling method and you’ll likely get 2 very different answers. For a style that implies simple execution, there can be a lot of moving parts involved in the routine.  No matter how many steps you actually use between washing and going, these 4 tips will help you get it right every time.

cowashing and conditioning natural hair Give hair a good conditioning for moisturized curls

1. Condition, Condition, Condition: Co-washing (washing hair with conditioner) with Mizani Moisturfusion Silk Cream Conditioner and using a leave-in conditioner on soaking wet hair will help keep curls moisturized. If you use shampoo, try a sulfate-free formula like DevaCurl No Poo that won’t strip your hair.

detangle natural hair Detangle hair carefully with fingers, a wide tooth comb or Denman brush

2. Get the tangles out:  A detangled wash-n-go is a happy wash-n-go. To detangle, use your fingers, a wide tooth comb or Denman brush on conditioned hair. I like to detangle my hair while leaning forward to encourage my curls to hang.

don't towel dry natural hair We hope that's a microfiber towel; terrycloth towels can snag hair

3. Don’t towel dry: Get excess water out of your hair with a microfiber towel or t-shirt. A regular terrycloth towel can snag strands and encourage frizz.

keep hands out of hair Keep your hands our of your hair until it dries

4. Do not touch: Keep your hands out of your hair ‘til it dries! Let your coils dry undisturbed or you’ll end up with a ball of frizzy curls to deal with.

Pineappling will preserve your wash-n-go overnight. Refresh curls as needed with DevaCurl Mis-ter Right.

Use these tips for your next wash-n-go and you’ll have an easy style to rock all spring long.
