Meet The Swag Haircut

Alexa Chung swag haircutHair trends come and go, but once you find a look you love you tend to stick with it. Right now we're crushing on the swag haircut. Long hair fans rejoice- this cut has length. Plus a little edge and little bit of the lazy girl/girl on the go "I haven't had time to get my hair cut in a while," statement.

Celebrity Stylist Sunnie Brook is responsible for coining the term- which meshes swing and shag together- and the cut features razored layers and bangs with a bit of a grown out look. Texture is key; this cut is all about natural waves and movement. Patti Smith might be the original swag sporter, and celebrities like Alexa Chung have done a modern take.

You can create the swag with layers just around the face or with razored layers all over. Those with lots of natural texture might have more control with the swag light version. What do you need to make it work for you? Plenty of the right products.

Those with thin and fine hair who need a texture boost, go with volumizing and texturizing products. Products like CHI Magnified Volume Spray Foam boost roots and add body to fine hair prior to styling, while AG Hair Beach Bomb Tousled Texture creates natural waves and texture. Use a 1-inch curling iron, like the CHI DURA 1" Ceramic Spring Curling Iron, to create additional waves as needed, styling them with your fingers to loosen them.

For those with natural texture, enhance waves and curls with products like Paul Mitchell Curl Twirl Around or DevaCurl Spray Gel. If hair is extra frizzy, especially around the bangs, try a serum like Joico K-PAK Protect & Shine Serum. Dry hair until it's still a bit wet and let dry the rest of the way. Touch up bangs or small sections with too tight of curls with a flat iron.

The main goal? Be sure not to over style! The swag haircut is about imperfection and your hair's natural texture. Want to keep those waves and curls in tip top shape for your swag cut? Be sure to check out this post on keeping it healthy in the cooler months.
