Cue “Bugler’s Dream”! The 2012 Summer Olympics kick off this Friday! We are having a blast brainstorming ways to modernize the Team USA Opening Ceremony uniforms for a patriotic, at-home look that will have everyone seeing stars! (The good kind, of course!)
The Opening Ceremony marks the official start of the Olympics. The athletes from all competing countries gather for the "Parade of Nations" and the lighting of the torch. Each country has a specially designed uniform that is reflective of its nation's colors and culture. This year (and for the past few years), American fashion designer, Ralph Lauren, designed the uniforms for the USA. The design stays true to the brand’s signature classic prep style, while incorporating a vintage, almost military look inspired by the 1948 Olympic games in England. The women’s uniform includes a white blouse, white pleated knee-length skirt, navy blazer, and a red, white, and blue striped scarf. The matching men’s uniforms include a white cotton sport shirt, white trousers, a tailored navy double-breasted blazer, and a navy and red necktie. A navy beret completes both the men and women’s looks.
Planning an Olympics viewing party with friends? Want a fun, festive look for the occasion? Before packing away your “Fourth of July” ensembles, dig those red, white, and blues back out to show your spirit, because it still applies here! We have some modern takes on looks inspired by this year’s uniforms that are sure to take the gold.
These looks would pair perfectly with classic hairstyles, such as The Sock Bun, or long, flowy Veronica Lake-esque curls for a more demure, vintage look. The Beauty Department gives a great step-by-step tutorial on how to perfect the classic curls. To get this look, you will first need a 1" barrel curling iron, a fine-tooth comb, and a bottle of firm holding hairspray. (For help finding the best spray for you, try our Product Matchmaker!) Next, get that comb out and dig deep for a heavy side part. You will then begin to curl sections of your hair toward your face until you achieve a head full of tight tendrils. Mist the curls with the holding spray, and let dry for about 5 minutes. You will then need to comb through the curls until the cascading pattern sets in. Once you achieve the look, the final step is a thin layer of holding spray to keep the curls in place.
With these hair and style tips, you should look nothing short of "American Beauty" while simultaneously rooting for your home team! For more festive ways to dress up your 'do and wardrobe, check out our Fourth of July Hairstyles and Trends post to take your team spirit to another level.
Be sure to tune in this Friday, July 27th at 9pm Eastern for the start of the 2012 London Summer Olympics, and wear your red, white, blue, and hairstyles proudly! GO USA!
