Runway To Reality: How to Wear Fall 2013 Fashion Trends

So, you're readying your hair, nail colors and beauty routine for fall, but is your wardrobe ready? If not, no worries! We've got your guide to making the major fall runway trends a reality in your closet.

Punk Trend

punk fashion trend fall 2013It looks like the punk theme from this year's Met Gala will be sticking around for fall. To make this trend work in the real world without looking like you're in costume, choose one rebellious element and combine it with a more refined piece. Think a winter floral blouse with slim trousers, a bad-ass studded leather jacket with dark denim, or a leather pencil skirt with textured tights.

Key pieces: Anything leather (or coated to look like leather), plaid patterns, winter floral motifs, textured tights

Winter Pastels

Forget everything you know about traditional fall color palettes. This season is all about adding pastel colors and white to the mix. To pull off cool weather pastels and winter whites, keep a part of your ensemble dark or neutral to warm up the look.

Key pieces: pastel or light colored outerwear with simple, modern lines

Borrowed From the Boys

The menswear influence is going strong for fall. Get in on this polished trend by adopting structured pieces, military inspiration, subdued colors and menswear patterns. Throw on an over-sized peacoat or try wearing classic suiting (preferably in houndstooth and herringbone) worn as separates. Pair them with fluid, sheer or lace pieces underneath to give the look a decidedly feminine touch.

Key pieces: Classic suiting, structured patterned separates and roomy overcoats.

Fur

Love it or hate it, fur was a key statement piece on the fall runways. Opulent furs were spotted as luxe collar accents or fashioned to be worn as a full on coat or vest. Opposed to real fur? Go faux or layer on another textural element with a tactile quality to give your look visual interest.

Key piece: Fur (or faux) accented outerwear

Retro Ladylike

The feminine "New look" that Dior pioneered in the 40's is back again this season. Think Hitchcock heroine chic.  Everything is either belted or tailored for a little fit and flare action that makes the waist a focal point. Make this trend your own by belting suits or belting blazers and cardigans over trousers and full skirts. Fab gloves are optional.

Key pieces: Belts, jackets nipped at the waist, cardigans, gloves, knee length skirts, fluid trousers.

If you're intimidated by runway trends, don't be. They can seem utterly unwearable at first glance, but once you break down the key elements they're actually quite workable for real life.
