Smooth Hair Tutorial: How to Use Wella Smoothing Balm

Smooth hair is on the top of everyone's wishlist, but isn't always easy to get (especially when Mother Nature has other things in mind).  Wella Flowing Form Smoothing Balm is a lightweight cream-based product that leaves hair feeling smooth and manageable throughout the day.

Loxa staffers Melanie and Tyler put Wella Flowing Form Smoothing Balm to the test to see how it would work on their thick hair.  Here's how to use it:

What you'll need:

Wella Flowing Form Smoothing Balm
A comb
A blow dryer

For the smoothest style, start with a shampoo and super moisturizing conditioner. I have thick, wavy hair, so I went with the Wella Brilliance Shampoo and Conditioner for Coarse, Colored Hair.

Wella Flowing Form Smoothing Balm should be applied to damp (but not dripping wet!) hair. Start this style by towel drying your hair.

Step 1: Dispense Wella Flowing Form Smoothing Balm onto your hand. For my shoulder length, thick hair, Melanie used the size of a quarter (about three pumps of the product). For hair that is shorter and finer, use less. Remember: you can always add more product easily! It's harder to remove too much.

Step 2: Rub palms together to evenly distribute product.

Step 3: Work product through your hair from root to tip, focusing primarily on the middle and the ends (which is where most breakage and frizz appears).

Step 4: Using  your fingers or a comb, comb through hair to remove any tangles.

Step 5: Blow dry using your desired method. For a sleek style, use a paddle or vented brush and point your dryer nozzle downward. For more volume, use a round brush and lift frequently at the root.

Smooth Hair Tutorial: How to Use Wella Smoothing Balm

Tyler started with the Enrich Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner for Coarse Hair, which works well on his thick, but not color treated, hair.

Step 1:  Tyler started by blowing drying hair lightly while combing it back to the right.  Make sure not to blow dry it completely because the Wella Flowing Form Smoothing Balm works best with damp hair.

Step 2:  For short, thick hair,  he used a single pump of the product and worked it into hands thoroughly.  Then run fingers through  hair on the top only from front to back, creating the style you want.

In just two simple steps, the Wella Flowing Form Smoothing Balm allowed Tyler to create a simple, classic men's hairstyle.  "This balm gave my hair a natural, smooth look that was flexible yet durable throughout the work day."
