The Mane Details: Maxie McCoy

The-Mane-Details-Maxie-McCoy-Jada-Beauty

Maxie McCoy's personality is just as fun as her picture portrays. The native Texan currently calls San Francisco home base, but her job has her jet setting across the country and occasionally overseas. We asked the natural red head about living out of a suitcase, her bold lip choices, and a pre-date hair horror story.

the-basics-2

Where do you live and play? I live in a lovely little San Francisco Neighborhood called North Beach. However, I might spend more time on United Airlines than I do in my own bed because of my work. #RoadWarrior

What do you do? I’m the Director of Local Levo for Levo League, a company dedicated to elevating the careers of women. I manage our offline communities which means I get to travel around meeting and bringing our resources to the most inspiring women. I’m also a writer. iloinspired.com is my blog, which is a daily outlet for the ideas that inspire me and the lessons I learn along the way. I like to think of it as a way of sparking the soul of anyone who happens across ilo.

I also authored the book Less Work More Money: The Entrepreneurial Life Plan, which is the story of two Dallas entrepreneurs and their path to success. It launched at No.1 on 13 different Amazon Best Seller lists and was one of the most incredible experiences of my career.

the-hair-story-2

How would you describe your style when it comes to hair? I can genuinely say I don’t have just one. Because I’ve been blessed with insanely curly hair, one day it will be a head of curls that rivals Oprah’s (just a bit more red) and the next day it will be a blown out and teased mane true to my southern roots.

What’s your typical hair routine like? There’s no such thing as typical. Every day is something different depending on the weather or the occasion. If it’s curly, I put in leave in condition and curling cream, followed by scrunching my hair with paper towels. Paper towels are the best secret to perfect curls: it shapes your curls without causing the friction that leads to frizz like bath towels do. If I’m going smooth, then I throw in some smoothing cream, blow out my hair with a giant round brush and finish it with a straightener, rounding waves as I pull the iron through. The only consistent thing about my hair routine is my teasing comb and hairspray. No matter the do, those two always finish my hair.

What products can you not live without? A volumizing hair spray [we like Tigi Catwalk Your Highness Root Boost Spray] and my teasing comb, of course. It’s my Texas roots really coming out to play, because I still think everything bigger is better, especially my hair.

Tell us about your stylist & salon. How did you find them? My stylists, Amber, is such a hair goddess. She’s the one that took me from my old days of platinum blonde to my current shade of red. I always joke that if I ever move from SF, I have to find a way for her to come with me.

What’s the one thing you’ve always wanted to try with your hair but been too scared to attempt? I’m pretty safe with my hair. For years I wanted to ditch my platinum blonde hair and go back to my natural strawberry color. I thought about it all through college and never did it. And finally, about 2 years ago I finally said goodbye to the blonde and I’m never going back. I love being red. It completely matches my coloring so much better and makes me feel so comfortable in my own skin. I feel like you can finally see “me” instead of just a head of blonde hair.

What’s your hair horror story? (We all have one...) When I was in high school, I let my mom highlight my hair. She did the ole “pull it through a cap” trick whenever I needed to lighten it up and it was always a success. One time, she decided she would try her hand at foiling it instead of using the cap. Well, let’s just say she didn’t do her homework and 2 hours later I ended up with two 4 inch white streaks directly across my scalp. And to make matters worse, it was the night before a guy I had a huge high school crush on was coming into town. Hours of freaking out (and I’m sure crying), I had a plan to wear a headscarf to school, ditching 7th period and heading to a hairdresser who could fix it. The woman was a saint, throwing in lowlights and highlights and making my hair look perfect again. That guy never knew a thing and my mom and I have a fun story to giggle about 9 years later.

Maxie McCoy The Mane Details with Loxa Beauty

How would you describe your overall style? I love anything that makes me feel “Maxie”. I love putting on a classy outfit like a bold blazer, pencil skirt and heels, but never say no to a chance to throw on tennis shoes, a ball cap and lululemon.

Where do you find style inspiration? The mannequins of my favorite stores: Zara, Bloomingdales, Nordstroms. haha I’m not one that gets overly into fashion. So if I see something I love, that makes me look and feel great, that’s all I really care about.

We love you're not afraid to sport bold lipstick! What are your favorites? A bold lipstick is my must have accessory to any look. There’s just nothing like rocking your lady lips. My current favorites are the YSL Glossy Stain in Rouge Gouache and Kat Von D Everlasting Love Liquid Lipstick in Outlaw. You can dance or chat the night away without having to think twice about your lips.

You travel a significant amount of time for work. Any tips for adjusting a beauty routine when living out of suitcase? My beauty routine pretty much stays the same. Which is important for me when so many things are completely different on the road. It makes me feel me no matter what city I’m in.

How do you decide what to pack for a trip? I have the same outfits that I pack for every trip (given the appropriate weather). When you’re in and out of a suitcase as much as I have been, being able to pack in an instant, and without thinking is key to keeping sane.

fill-in-the-blank-2

The person whose hair I’d love to have for a week would be…Beyonce’s pixie cut. And then I’d want my big red hair back.

The person whose closet I'd love to raid is…Lady Gaga...wouldn’t that be fun! Especially for Halloween.

I spend way too much money at…SoulCycle. But when I feel good, I know it shows on the outside. So, I chalk it up as worth it?

My purse is never complete without…Lipstick. My Moleskine. A couple inky pens. And stamps. (My purse is more Mary Poppins tote than purse).

My secret beauty weapon is…My teasing comb...or paper towels.

My celebrity crush is…Oprah. Girl crushes are allowed right?

The place I haven't visited that's on my list…Bali, Rome and Australia.

The best advice I've received is…Love your job enough to love your problems, too.

I dream of…Today. Fully enjoying the tiny dreams right now will lead to experiencing the big dreams of tomorrow.
