Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the primary psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. It is responsible for the high sensation associated with cannabis. On the other hand, CBD does not produce a psychoactive effect like THC.
CBD is derived from the cannabis plant. Cannabis plants are either hemp or marijuana, depending on how much THC they contain. CBD oil is derived from legal hemp plants. According to the FDA, hemp plants are permitted under the Farm Bill if they contain less than 0.3 percent THC.

A survey of 2,701 fibromyalgia patients found that those who used CBD for pain relief experienced a slight to major partial recovery. Furthermore, preclinical results from rat research suggest that CBD may be effective for arthritic pain and inflammation, but human studies are limited.
